Off to the Races!

I just wanted to hear you guys opinions on races. How do you decide whether or not you want to race with someone if you are pretty sure that is the case. i mean aside from being pot committed, what are other factors that determine your decision? Just a feeling...Instinct...willingness to gamble that sort of stuff.

Also would you rather have 1010 or AK when racing..

I just wanted to get this idea flowing because races are huge in tournaments...and i would like to have some more opinions before we go to Winstar...

Fucking Jacks......That's all im gonna say

Coin flips are all luck, 50/50 gamble before the flop and lets see who wins. Therefore all there really is to consider is what part of the tournament you are at and how much it will cost vs folding and waiting for a better spot. In cash games you should not be engaging in coin flips...I suggest moving in with aces but lets just hope this time A 2 doesn't call you.

Coin flips in cash games are ultimately about the odds you are getting. All you really need to do here is make a mathematically correct decision. Usually, you'll be getting the correct odds to call, assuming its a coin flip...

As for tournaments, when the ratio of the blinds and antes to your stack increases, you must get in there and gamble sometime. You can't just sit and wait for aces. Although poker is a lot of skill, deep in tournaments, the luck factors starts to play a bigger and bigger role. Also, in big tournaments (with 300+ people) I don't mind racing in the early levels. I try to accumulate as many chips as I can in these big tournaments, so races are favorable to my strategy early on. If I can win an early race and double my stack, I can afford to play more loose and aggressive in order to accumulate even more chips so that I'm not treading water when it comes time for the bubble.

I remember hearing when Johnny Chan won the WSOP in '89?, he won something crazy like 12 races in a row to stay alive.....go figure

Another alternative in cash games is to run it twice, like on High Stakes Poker. Especially if it is an expensive race, running it twice will most likely result in you two getting your money back. BTW, running it twice in this instance would consist of dealing two boards with each board representing half of the pot. Therefore, if you won the first hand and villian won the second hand, you would each take half and get your money back. I don't know if they allow this there, but at the casino (this has never come up yet) but I will ask the guy beforehand if he just wants to split the pot (maybe even before cards are turned up), regardless of who wins...just an idea
