Rockets

The following hand happened at Park's game (1/2 NL).

I'm in 4th position and look down at two red aces. The average raise at the table has been anywhere from $12 to $25 pre flop but I haven't made a raise larger than $8 pre flop. I raise to $7 and get a caller from the button. All I can really say about the guy on the button is that he is a good player but we both can't seem to figure each other out. He makes solid plays and follows up on his reads if he senses weakness. The flop came 9 6 4 rainbow and I led out for $15 followed by a quick call. On the turn a 5 fell putting two clubs out there. I led again for $25, the villian thought about it for a second then raised to $75. I thought about putting in a 3rd raise but I figured against it because if I was beat I was throwing away my money and I just wanted to get to showdown. I threw in my call and said "call, check" implying I checked dark on the river. The river came another 5 making the board 9 6 4 5 5. Villian exclaimed all in for $170. What now?

I would say he missed his flush/straight draw...and i know the player you are talking about he is liable to bluff like that when he misses his draws...i would have called as well

Seems like to me that he could have 8-7, 7-5 or 5-3....in any case you're beat. The raise on the turn doesn't feel like a bluff raise to me, maybe a semi-bluff with the 7-5, but im not sure. Seems like with a 9 he might just call it down, so I think we can eliminate that. He also could be "slow-playing" JJ-KK, thinking it's good. He also might have a pair and a flush draw on the turn. Ultimately to me, it seems like 87, 75, 53, or maybe 65. The only case where your hand is good if he's got a complete bluff or JJ-KK. I probably would have laid it down...Im so confused

I was so confused too so I decided I needed more information. I counted out my remaining money and the $170 call would leave me with around $50, so basically if I was wrong I was going to lose my stack. I thought about all the actions and still couldn't figure out what he had so I thought back to a few previous situations. First off, he had usually value bet his hands on the river when he wanted to get paid so if he did have a legit hand in this place he might have bet something like $90. Another thing I noticed was that he sat back in his chair and started eating his salad from the side acting like he didn't have a care in the world. I started leaning towards calling but I still was very confused. I decided to use one last trick to see if I could pull off any more information. I showed him my two aces and tried to see his reaction...he looked over at them then acted very disinterested and went back to eating his salad. Something about how all the information added up gave me a gut feeling that he was on a bluff. This guy really had not figured me out all night and was getting frustrated with the way I was playing. I also knew he couldn't put me on aces there just by the way I had played the hand. I called him and he threw his hand in the muck saying "your hands good". I don't know what he had but I guess the point of posting this is that by the play of this hand I wanted to lay it down but reading his body language I put him on a bluff. Online I could have never made this play which is why live poker can have no substitutes.
